Smoothing algorithms in image processing

Comparison of four smoothing algorithms:

• Gaussian filter
• Exponential filter
• Moving Average filter
• Cubic spline smoothing

All filters are separable and are implemented recursively with a cost that independant of the window size. Each filter is characterized by its equivalent window size. The user can also specify an x-y anisotropy factor.

Installation

The software package listed below are written in Java. It is a plugin of ImageJ. Note that ImageJ is a public-domain software package for image processing. It is free and it doesn't take more than a couple of minutes to install ImageJ. It a runs on any platforms: Windows, Mac OS9 and Mac OSX, Linux and Unix.

The ZIP archive file contains the Java class files. After having extracted the archive file, you should put the "Smoothing" directory into the plugins directory of ImageJ.
