AbstractAlthough the detection of edges and various types of keypoints is a well examined and described area, multi scale detection of symmetry centers, especially for odd orders, poses a challenge in pattern analysis. Our goal is to to explore the area of odd symmetry detectors based on wavelets and provide an optimal solution to the problem. During the presentation, I review the steerable wavelets and the construction of the 2-D polar separable steerable pyramid. Then I propose different methods to develop an M-fold symmetry detector wavelet. I also investigate the question of steering the detector to the optimal angle. Finally, I illustrate the advantages of our design for pattern analysis in simulated and real microscopical images.
