AbstractThe idea of differentiation of non-integer order arose immediately after the birth of the classical differential calculus. The subsequent development led much later to such notions like left- and right-sided fractional-order derivatives, variable-order derivatives, distributed-order derivatives, all in various forms. Numerical methods for computation of generalized derivatives and for solution of differential equations with generalized derivatives were elaborated due to rapidly growing number of applications in science and engineering. We will take a somewhat non-traditional look a the development of such concepts and methods.
